Affordable luxury continues to make strides in the footwear industry, as seen in Aethon Ulyse, a new brand showing in the Emerging Designers area at FFANY Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
Scorpion zipper pulls and a hammered gold motif are just a few of the signature designs featured in Aethon Ulyse’s Spring ’17 collection, which glistens with ancient Greek influences.
The women’s footwear brand takes the roots of its ancient Greek name to heart. ‘Aethon’ is an ancient Greek word meaning ‘blazing’ or ‘shining,’ which is the feeling founder and CEO Payden Sewell says he want clients to feel as soon as they put on the brand’s shoes.
Other Greek influences can be found throughout the line, including architectural shapes, the use of metallic color and delicate handcrafted embroidery. Even the brand’s initials, AU, symbolize gold on the periodic table.
The collection spans stilettos draped with chains, mesh shoeties, metallic and mesh pumps and wedges with cork heels. Standout styles include the Selene cutout sandal and the Erato lace-up bootie, which Sewell says clients have been going crazy over.
Aethon Ulyse was founded in 2012 as a custom shoe brand. The spring line marks the brand’s first full ready-to-wear collection—a move Sewell says was edged on from feedback from the industry.
“Also, my private clients were ready to get their hands on the collection,” he quipped.
Sewell’s clients expressed frustration over the lack of high quality footwear that was edgy and below the $1,000 threshold. The Spring ’17 collection wholesales for $160-$360.
“Through our Italian factory partnerships, we can produce a unique and high quality product at a price point that is more accessible,” he said.
The brand currently sells direct to consumers online, however, Sewell is hoping to find the right buyer mix for the brand at FFANY.
“We are looking to receive additional buyer feedback as well as expose the brand to those who are not yet familiar.”
